Heathrow’s Retail Services Team recently spent the day at St Marks Catholic School in Hounslow, helping them to create an allotment supported through funding from the BAA Communities Trust.

A grant of £2855 was awarded to the school to set up an allotment. The team of volunteers from Heathrow helped to prepare the ground, design and build raised beds, and build a path to enable access by wheelchair users.

The grant was also used to purchase tools and maintenance equipment, a shed, compost bins, and a number of rainwater butts.

The allotment will be used by 138 children including those with special needs.

The team helped to create a unique allotment in an unused space in the school grounds to be seen and used by all the children.  The site means that the school can now offer horticulture training to students leading to a BTEC qualification.

Max Vialou Clark, retail services director, said: “The Retail Services team were delighted to be invited to St Mark’s Catholic School on Tuesday 25th October. We took a team of 23 able and willing volunteers to be “green-fingered” for the day. We cleaned out a pond, cleared an area for a memorial garden, built raised beds and generally hoed, raked, swept and dug. It was great fun and we hope we gave the kids a helping hand to continue with their Horticultural training.
