  • 6.58 million passengers chose to travel through Heathrow in September 2014, an increase of 0.3% on September 2013, making it the airport’s busiest ever September
  • Passenger growth at Heathrow continued to be supported by larger, fuller, quieter aircraft. Seats per aircraft increased 0.4% to 204.8, while load factors increased 1.1 percentage points to 81%. Passengers per aircraft rose 1.5% to 165.9
  • Within emerging markets, passenger volumes increased 17.6% to Mexico, 14.9% to China and 10.3% to Brazil
  • Heathrow continued to welcome the transfer passengers that make such long-haul routes viable, with volumes increasing 2.9%
  • Cargo was up 7.8% overall, increasing 57.2% to Mexico, 52.2% to Nigeria, 37.1% to Russia, 25.6% to China and 20.8% to India
  • Two independent polls underlined growing support for Heathrow’s expansion amongst MPs and local residents. A majority of MPs now support an additional runway at Heathrow, with 91% of those who support also believing it will secure parliamentary approval (Ipsos MORI). Local residents are also more in favour of expansion at Heathrow, with 49% supporting an additional runway and 32% opposing (Populus)

  • A record 7.05 million passengers travelled through Heathrow in August 2014, an increase of 1.3% on August 2013, making it Heathrow’s busiest ever month and the first time the airport has handled more than 7 million passengers in a single month
  • With growth boosted by the summer months, 17th of August also saw Heathrow’s record busiest day, with 241,412 passengers passing through the terminals
  • Larger, fuller aircraft continue to drive passenger numbers at Heathrow. Seats per aircraft increased 0.5% to 205.2, while load factors increased 1 percentage point to 83.7%. Passengers per aircraft rose 1.7% to 171.8
  • Within emerging markets, Mexico was up 15.3%, China was up 9.3% and India was up 3.7%
  • Cargo was up 7.5% overall, increasing 58% to Turkey, 33% to Russia, 32% to Brazil, 30% to Mexico and 16% to China
  • Highlighting the critical role links to emerging markets play in the UK’s long-term sustainable growth, the CBI described Britain’s lack of hub capacity as a “ticking time bomb”, calling on the Airports Commission to deliver a single hub solution as the only way to boost connections with the export markets of tomorrow

  • 6.97million passengers travelled through Heathrow in July 2014, an increase of 0.5% on July 2013 and Heathrow’s busiest ever month
  • 27th of July also saw Heathrow’s record busiest day, with 239,928 passengers passing through the terminals
  • Seats per aircraft increased 0.7% to 204.9, whilst load factors decreased 0.5 percentage points to 82.3%. Passengers per aircraft rose 0.1% to 168.7
  • Within the emerging markets, Mexico was up 15.4%, China was up 10.4%, India was up 7.6%
  • Cargo was up 7.8% overall, increasing nearly 36% to Mexico, 34.6% to Russia and 11.5% to China
  • China’s performance is likely to strengthen further in forthcoming months, with Air China set to double its service to Beijing from October, following which there will be 51 departures from Heathrow per week to mainland China
  • Air China’s flights will operate from T2, demonstrating at an early stage the benefits of having STAR alliance operating under one roof - maximising transfer traffic and therefore the economic viability of routes

  • Seats per aircraft increased 0.4% to 203.5, whilst load factors decreased 0.2 percentage points to 80.8%. Passengers per aircraft rose 0.2% to 164.5
  • Within the emerging markets, Turkey was up 7.5%, Mexico was up 6.2%, and China increased 5.7%
  • Cargo was up 4.7% overall, increasing 37.3% to Mexico, 23.4% to China and 16.7% to Brazil
  • June also saw the successful opening of Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal, almost 60 years after the original Terminal 2 opened as the airport’s first passenger terminal in 1955.

  • 6.2 million passengers passed through Heathrow in May 2014, an increase of 2.2% on May 2013 and a record for the month.
  • Air transport movements rose to 41,211, up 1.9% on May 2013.
  • Seats per aircraft decreased 0.1% to 202.6, whilst load factors grew by 0.4 percentage points to 75.1%. Passengers per aircraft rose 0.3% to 152.1.
  • Within the emerging markets, China was up 13.5%, Nigeria was up 7.6% and India was up 2.7%.
  • Cargo was up 6.9% globally, with Mexico increasing 54%, China increasing 38% and Brazil increasing 21%. The scale and growth of these important long haul markets shows the unique role of Heathrow as the UK’s hub – other London airports like Gatwick or regional airports like Birmingham are important but no substitute for capacity at the hub.
  • In May Heathrow unveiled its revised proposals for a third runway, which showed how only Heathrow can connect the whole of the UK to growth. The proposals included a pledge to double cargo capacity at Heathrow.
